Freetown City Council Opens first Early Learning Adventure Day Care & Nursery Center

The Freetown City Council has opened its first FCC Early Learning Adventure Day Care & Nursery Center for children residing at Congo Water Market, Wellington.

Delivering on her campaign promise to provide free pre-school education for children of market women within the municipality, Her Worship the Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr’s vision today become a reality. The launch event was hosted by ward Councillor Agnes Marah and attended by FCC councillors and staff, representatives of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and Congo Water Community stakeholders.

The daycare and nursery will cater for 40 children aged 0-5 years (18 girls and 22 boys have registered) who will receive free early education using hands-on activities designed to promote the development of motor and cognitive abilities. The only condition for registration at the centre is that the mother is a trader at the Congo Water Market!! FCC is thrilled to provide this excellent opportunity for some of the most vulnerable children in the Congo Water community, laying a strong foundation that will increase their chances of achieving their full potential as they grow up.

American philanthropist Ms Sonia Gardner has partnered with FCC to fund the FCC Early Learning Adventure Day Care and Nursery Centre in Congo Water Market and the next centre to be opened in Kroo Town Road Market later this year. Funding covers the building construction as well as teaching staff and learning materials for two years.

The school will be managed by Narnia Educational Group, an educational consultancy and early learning centre accredited by the Network Teaching Children i.e NTC system of learning. FCC will continue to maintain the centres beyond that time and is committed to providing more pre-school facilities in Freetown’s markets.

We are excited that in partnership with Job Search SL and Platform Capital Group digital adult literacy opportunities are currently being offered to women traders at Congo Water Market which means that mothers and children have the chance to learn at the market!
