The Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Rt. Hon. Dr Sidie Mohamed Tunis has accomplished a significant mission to address the political situation in Senegal, in a commendable demonstration of regional diplomacy.

The mission, which took place on February 12 and 13, 2024, aimed to evaluate the difficulties associated with delaying the Presidential Elections and offer suggestions to protect Senegal’s democratic processes, peace, and stability.

Dr. Tunis held several meetings with important parties, including Parliamentary groups, representatives of civil society, political actors, and His Excellency Amadou Mame Diop, Speaker of the Senegalese National Assembly, while escorted by distinguished members of the ECOWAS Parliament. The socio-political climate of Senegal and the attempts being made to break the impasse in the elections were both greatly illuminated by these consultations.

The Parliamentary delegation’s recommendations emphasized how critical it is to have a calm, measured, and inclusive political discourse to address Senegal’s problems. Dr. Tunis reaffirmed the ECOWAS Parliament’s unwavering support for the Senegalese people and underlined the organization’s commitment to helping to facilitate a national political dialogue to break the current impasse.

The leadership of Dr. Tunis and the combined efforts of the ECOWAS Parliamentary mission signal a shared commitment to maintaining stability, democratic values, and the rule of law in the region, at a pivotal point in Senegal’s democratic journey. The mission’s completion represents a major advancement in resolving Senegal’s political issues and reaffirms the ECOWAS community’s commitment to supporting its members in unpredictable times.
