The first Sierra Leone-China On-Site First Aid Training Centre was officially opened on Wednesday at the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital in Freetown, ushering in a new era of medical collaboration between China and Sierra Leone. The centre’s goal is to strengthen local emergency medical capacity by teaching Sierra Leoneans practical first aid skills and preparing them to respond effectively to a variety of urgent health situations.
Liu Longfei, chief of the 26th batch of the Chinese medical team serving in Sierra Leone, described the launch as “a new chapter” in collaboration, emphasizing the team’s dedication to the local population’s health and safety. The Chinese medical team, which played a key role in establishing the training center, stated that it will continue to develop and innovate on-site first aid instruction, sharing its experience and technical know-how with Sierra Leone’s health sector.
Wang Qing, the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, emphasized the contribution of the Hunan Province medical team, citing its track record of implementing successful medical projects and health worker training programs over time. “The center will go a long way in bringing medical services closer to the local communities,” he said, emphasizing the importance of readily available emergency care.
Sartie Kanneh, chief medical officer at Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health, welcomed the initiative and highlighted the close alignment between the ministry’s priorities and China’s support for health-sector development. He recalled China’s assistance to Sierra Leone.
