A devoted and respected Muslim family in the Western part of Freetown, Sierra Leone, has threatened to kill their 44-year-old son after learning that he is a practising LGBTQ+ member. Mohamed Dauda Kamara, whose father was the chief Imam of one of Western Freetown’s largest mosques, and his mother, a well-known Haja (who has twice visited Mecca), has been on the run since August 2024, and his current whereabouts are unknown. A 33-year-old man from Freetown, Maligie Bangura, has gone into hiding after refusing initiation into the Gbagbani Secret Society, a powerful traditional group among the Limba people in northern Sierra Leone.
