Local workers with the Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray
Local workers at the Leone Rock Metal Group (LRMG) former Kingho Mining, have lamented the ordeal they face at the Mining Company to the Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray.
This revelation was made to the Minister on Thursday 20th June, when he paid a visit to the Leone Rock Mining site to gather first-hand information about the welfare of the workers. This visit comes after publications about the poor treatment of local workers, and poor condition of service among others, which were denied by the company. During his visit, the Minister maintained that with the enactment of the new Labour Law, everyone is entitled to a decent working condition and assured the workers of his continued support.
He stated that the meeting is confidential and that whatever they will discuss concerning the working conditions of employees, will not warrant any reprisal action against employees for voicing them out. Local workers from various sub-companies of Leone Rock started by thanking the Minister for his visit, and one CFRG rep revealed that management has been terminating staff without any good reason.
Another rep from the Health Department expressed that the company has no respect for national workers, adding that promotion has been selective.
He also mentioned that there are local jobs that are given to foreigners instead of the locals, noting that discrimination, intimidation and harassment are prevalent.
In his response, the Minister said that issues relating to violence, harassment, disrespect, discrimination and intimidation are unacceptable within the framework of the Employment Act of 2023, and stressed that there are penalties and sanctions for any violation of the same.
In his response, the Human Resource Director of LRMG, Mohamed Daffe, said that they were told that a couple of staff alleged that there were isolated incidents of mistreatment in the workplace.
He furthered that Management is investigating to verify those allegations, but could not authenticate them, as they are yet to get the actual victims on whose behalf those allegations were made.
