The Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Mr Abu Martin Kanneh, began a focused internal familiarisation tour of the Customs Services Department at the Customs House in Cline Town, Freetown. The visit is part of wider initiatives by NRA senior management to engage with frontline staff, build team spirit, and foster collaboration to further the Authority’s mandate of revenue mobilisation.
Commissioner General Kanneh told Customs personnel that he started his career in Customs as a collector and worked his way up to Commissioner of Customs before assuming the post of Commissioner General. His broad knowledge of institutions, he said, gave him a clear understanding of the department’s crucial role in national revenue collection and the need for coordinated action at all levels.
“I was here as the Commissioner of Customs, so I know the work you are doing. “I am here now as Commissioner General and I want us to work together to achieve the NRA’s mandate,” he told staff, describing the tour as a chance to listen and energise collective effort.
Mr Kanneh also touched on the Ministry of Finance’s urgency to generate revenue. He urged Customs staff to intensify efforts to help meet national fiscal goals, given the government’s increasing need for revenue. The government needs to collect more revenue than it ever has before. “So I am asking all of you in Customs to join us in this effort.”
Deputy Commissioner General I, Mrs Ann-Marie Baby Harding, took the opportunity to stress the importance of employee discipline, professionalism and strict adherence to the law. “There is no place for anyone to hide if they want to do otherwise,” she said, urging employees to have integrity in everything they do.
Deputy Commissioner General II, Ing. Edmond Benjamin Nonie, called on the personnel to focus on delivering tangible results and assured them of his willingness to assist staff. “I am particular as to results. “We have to be able to show what we’ve done. “My door is open,” he said, which fostered a communicative and open atmosphere.
Commissioner of Customs Services Mr Tennyson Bio promised the department’s unwavering support for CG Kanneh’s agenda. He urged staff to back the Commissioner General in carrying out reforms and boosting revenue performance.
The engagement between NRA top management and Customs staff reinforced Customs’ significance in the Authority’s revenue mobilisation strategy, encouraged collaboration, and set expectations for increased accountability and results in the coming months.
