Deputy High Commissioner Mrs Yvonne King Odigboh showed her support for Sierra Leonean Entrepreneurs and Community Leaders in London as the Distinguished Grand Chief Patron of the Sierra Leone Sellers Union UK Annual Luncheon Fête. The Jessie Duffett Tenant Hall on Wyndham Road hosted vendors, small business owners, families and community members for a day-long celebration of commerce, culture and diaspora solidarity under the theme “Uniting Vendors • Fostering Community • Empowering Trade.”
The meeting highlighted the Sierra Leonean diaspora’s important role in promoting entrepreneurship, creating livelihoods and strengthening transnational ties. Luncheon fête stallholders showcased a broad spectrum of goods and services – Sierra Leonean fashion, food, music and artisanal products – and had direct interaction with customers, making new business links. The atmosphere was lively and family-friendly, with entertainment, a raffle draw and other activities that encouraged participation across generations.
Mrs Yvonne King Odigboh’s participation at the event was more than ceremonial. She engaged with vendors and organisers, reflecting sustained diplomatic engagement with diaspora organisations that promote trade, skills development, and community cohesion. Her involvement showed how the Sierra Leone diplomatic mission, working with diaspora groups, can be a catalyst for opportunities for small businesses and help boost wider economic activity in the UK and back home in Sierra Leone.
Organisers grabbed the opportunity to celebrate the creativity, resilience and entrepreneurship demonstrated by Sierra Leonean traders in the UK. The event provided a platform for recognition and practical networking, allowing vendors to make contacts, try out products in a supportive market, and exchange ideas with peers. For many in attendance, the luncheon fete reminded them that entrepreneurship can be a path to self-sufficiency and community progress.
Against a backdrop of commerce and festivity, the Annual Luncheon Fête reiterated the importance of unity and collective action in advancing the interests of Sierra Leoneans abroad. The meeting, graced by the Distinguished Grand Chief Patron, Mrs King Odigboh, underscored the need for ongoing collaboration between Sierra Leone’s diplomatic envoys and diaspora-led initiatives to boost trade, strengthen community bonds, and contribute to sustainable development locally and nationally.
