Sierra Leone’s passport ranks 139th in the 2026 Passport Reports and lets its citizens enter 66 countries without first obtaining a visa. This amounts to 33.3% global coverage, with 66 destinations reachable and 132 requiring a visa in advance. The dataset reveals significant regional disparities in the destinations Sierra Leoneans can visit without a visa.

Caribbean access rules the regional scene

Based on the 2026 data, Sierra Leonean passport holders have the most access to the Caribbean region, with 75.0% of the destinations listed there. Sierra Leone citizens can visit 10 Caribbean countries without a visa, 1 country with easier access or visa on arrival, and 1 more country with an eTA. Four Caribbean territories require a visa in advance.

No visa is required for the following Caribbean countries: Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. Some of these allow relatively long stays: Barbados and Dominica allow up to 180 days; the Bahamas, Grenada, Haiti, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines allow up to 90 days; and Suriname offers a tourist card for up to 90 days. Saint Lucia is an easy entry country for a 42-day stay, and Saint Kitts and Nevis can be accessed through eTA for up to 90 days.

Good access all over Africa too

Africa remains the second most popular destination for Sierra Leoneans, with a general access rate of 66.0% across the African destinations covered in the report. The African breakdown shows 21 visa-free entry destinations, 13 visa-on-arrival or other simplified entry procedures, and one eTA-accepting destination. But 18 African destinations still require visas in advance. In the regional ranking of 54 African passports, Sierra Leone ranks 24th, and 24th among the member states of the African Union. Sierra Leone ranks 27th out of 57 OIC members in terms of outbound mobility.

Sierra Leoneans can enter several African countries without a visa and stay for up to 90 days. These include Benin, Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mauritius, Rwanda, Senegal and Uganda. Cabo Verde is visa-free under the EASE procedure, while Seychelles is the only African destination classified under eTA, which requires tourist registration and a 90-day allowance. Some countries in the simplified-entry category, including Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Gabon, South Sudan, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Mozambique, and Namibia, also offer eVisa facilities.

Other regions: Access mixed to limited

Outside of the Caribbean and Africa, access varies widely. Oceania has 50.0% total access, with 4 visa-free destinations, 3 visa-on-arrival or simplified-entry destinations, and 7 visa-required destinations, the report says. Fiji and Vanuatu permit stays of up to 120 days without a visa, and Kiribati and Micronesia allow 90 days and 30 days, respectively. The simplified-entry list includes Palau (30 days), Samoa (90 days), and Tuvalu (30 days).

North America (as grouped in the report), with 47.8% total access. Asia: 22.0% total access rate, with three visa-free destinations, seven visa-on-arrival or simplified entry destinations, and one eTA destination. Within Asia, Bangladesh is visa-free for 90 days, while Malaysia and Singapore are visa-free for Sierra Leoneans but require an arrival-card procedure for up to 30 days. Nepal is in the simplified-entry category and also offers an eVisa with a long 150-day stay, and Sri Lanka is listed as an eTA destination for 30 days.
South America is less welcoming: 16.7% of total access, with Suriname visa-free via a tourist card procedure, and Bolivia in the simplified-entry category.

No entry to Europe, the Gulf, Central Asia and the Middle East

The report says Sierra Leonean passport holders have no total access to Europe, the Gulf countries, Central Asia or the Middle East (0.0%). All 47 European destinations in the survey, all six Gulf destinations, five Central Asian destinations, and 17 Middle Eastern destinations in the data set require a visa in advance. These are the conditions for outbound travel for Sierra Leonean passport holders and not the rules that apply to foreign nationals entering Sierra Leone.

Inbound entry, reciprocity, and the difference between directions of travel

The Passport Reports dataset separates outbound mobility from inbound openness. Sierra Leone ranks 56th out of 199 countries in the report’s friendly index, which measures how easily foreign passport holders can enter a country. The ranking and the outbound passport score are different: Sierra Leone’s visa rules do not automatically mirror the entry conditions they apply to visitors. Sierra Leonean has an encounter abroad.

The report spells out these differences in the reciprocity section. It lists several countries whose citizens do not require a visa to enter Sierra Leone, either on arrival or by electronic permission. In contrast, Sierra Leonean passport holders require a visa to visit those countries. Less restrictive inbound travel policies to Sierra Leone by country include Germany, the United States, Angola, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, South Africa, and New Zealand. Visas are needed to visit Sierra Leone. But Sierra Leoneans with a Sierra Leone passport have an easier time going the other way.

Recent mobility history: Small variations between 2020 and 2026

As shown in the report’s historical series for 2020-2026, Sierra Leone’s mobility score has changed moderately over time. In 2020, the country had a mobility score of 56 and ranked 115th. The score increased to 60 in 2021 (rank 129) and then to 68 in 2022 (rank 135). It was ranked 136th in 2023 and received a mobility score of 69. In the subsequent years, Sierra Leone was ranked 68 (134th) in 2024, 68 (132nd) in 2025, and 66 (139th) in 2026. The dataset reports these annual values, without linking the changes to specific political, economic, diplomatic or security events.

Abstract

The 2026 Passport Reports dataset shows that a passport from Sierra Leone allows visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or eTA access to 66 destinations, while advance visas are needed for 132 other destinations. Sierra Leoneans have the highest regional access in the Caribbean and in Africa, and much lower access to Europe, the Gulf, Central Asia and the Middle East. Sierra Leone is still relatively open to many foreign passport holders. The inbound ranking and reciprocity data indicate the rules are not symmetrical in both directions.
