President Julius Maada Bio’s decision to drop all charges against former President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma and receive him at State House has helped ease a tense political atmosphere across Sierra Leone. The gesture, widely regarded as conciliatory and statesmanlike, has opened a new chapter in the relations between the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the opposition All People’s Congress (APC). Since 2018, the country has experienced repeated episodes of political upheaval leading to loss of life and property damage.
The events deepened divisions among supporters of the two main parties and increased mistrust in many communities, especially in the capital, Freetown. In his last two years in office, President Bio has taken several steps to de-escalate those tensions. Among the most effective have been the cancellation of charges and the warm welcome given to Dr Koroma. Many APC members and supporters visibly showed appreciation and relief at the return of their former leader. Jubilant APC supporters told the Gleaner Newspaper outside Dr Koroma’s Goderich residence that they were happy that the former president would not face prosecution.
“We are happy our former president is back home; we are happy he will not face any charges again; we thank President Bio for dropping all the charges against him,” said a joyous APC supporter, Alhaji Bangura. Political commentators and observers have described President Bio’s actions as patriotic and nationalistic in serving the larger goals of reconciliation and peaceful co-existence.
The president’s public gesture of goodwill toward his political opponent, and his call for the two leaders and their parties to maintain peaceful relations, have been credited with steadying nerves and shifting the public mood. In many parts of the country, the change of atmosphere was instant. To many Sierra Leoneans, it is a welcome image of the two leaders putting aside partisan hostility, a sign of stability after years of strain.
The gesture has been popular with APC supporters, but the SLPP response has been mixed. Whatever the future political fallout, President Bio’s decision to drop charges against Dr Koroma and allow him to return in dignity seems to have served a key purpose: reducing short-term tensions and creating space for renewed political engagement based on civility rather than confrontation.
