On April 14, 2026, President Julius Maada Bio received letters of credence from five newly accredited envoys in a ceremony that highlighted Sierra Leone’s determination to expand diplomatic, economic, and technical cooperation with international partners. The ambassadors from the Russian Federation, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and the United Mexican States were formally introduced to the President by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Timothy Musa Kabba.

The envoy from Russia, Ambassador Andrei Stolyarov, described Sierra Leone and Russia as longtime partners and praised the country’s progress in key sectors such as education, infrastructure, healthcare, and agriculture. He pledged to work to strengthen bilateral ties and expand cooperation opportunities between the two countries.

Ambassador Javad Deghan Haghighi Lotfabadi of Iran expressed strong support for Sierra Leone’s flagship “Feed Salone” initiative, which aims to improve food security and agricultural productivity. He also praised President Bio’s leadership role in ECOWAS, highlighting his contributions to regional peace and security efforts.

Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador Saud Mushabab Al Musaed welcomed the rapid establishment of his country’s diplomatic presence in Freetown, reaffirming Riyadh’s commitment to expanding a cooperative relationship based on mutual respect and benefits. High Commissioner Mahmood Akhtar Mahmood of Pakistan emphasised the deep historical ties between Sierra Leone and Pakistan, noting ongoing academic and technical exchanges and praising the President’s regional leadership.

Mexico’s Ambassador Norma Ang Sanchez reaffirmed her country’s commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation and improving bilateral relations in mutually beneficial areas such as development initiatives and capacity building.

In accepting the credentials, President Bio greeted each envoy warmly and reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s friendly relations with their respective countries. He emphasised that strengthening these partnerships is critical for advancing national development priorities and achieving shared prosperity. The President emphasised the importance of international cooperation, mutual respect, and sustainable development as foundations for future engagement.

The credentialing ceremony is a significant step forward in Sierra Leone’s diplomatic engagement and demonstrates the country’s ongoing commitment to strengthening international collaboration in the political, economic, and social domains.
