APC prioritises political ambitions over citizens’ basic needs

Sierra Leoneans are increasingly critical of the main opposition, the All People’s Congress (APC), claiming the party prioritises its political ambitions over the immediate needs of ordinary citizens.

Critics argue that the APC has largely failed to put pressure on the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) to address the country’s deepening economic crisis, instead appearing to be focused on narrow political goals. Since the SLPP took office in 2018, prices for basic foodstuffs have risen dramatically, and many households are struggling to make ends meet. Residents across the country frequently complain about unreliable electricity, inadequate healthcare facilities, a shaky public transportation network, and rising living costs.

Critics argue that the APC, which plans to unseat the SLPP in 2028, has done little to hold the government accountable for these hardships. Instead of mounting public campaigns to demand relief or pressing for policy responses to the deteriorating economic situation, the APC is reportedly withdrawing from governance and focusing on internal political battles. Critics claim that the focus became apparent when party energy shifted toward contesting the appointment of the head of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) rather than mobilising to address citizens’ day-to-day challenges. Many Sierra Leoneans have expressed dissatisfaction and disbelief over what they see as a misalignment of priorities.

“Is the APC not aware that ordinary Sierra Leoneans are suffering?” inquired one disgruntled resident. “Why don’t they protest the Bio administration about the deteriorating living conditions, lack of electricity, poor healthcare, and unreliable transportation, but instead focus on the appointment of the ECSL head?” another asked.

Observers and members of the public are becoming more vocal about the party’s perceived inaction. “What kind of opposition do we have?” asked a petty trader. “Why are they not concerned for us, the citizens? When will the APC stand up for the people in the same way that it stands up for its own agenda?
These criticisms raise broader concerns about the role of opposition parties during crises. While political parties must prepare for elections and pursue their platforms, critics argue that putting pressure on the government to alleviate immediate public suffering should be a concurrent priority. Many Sierra Leoneans believe that the APC’s recent decisions indicate a disconnect between the party’s agenda and the population’s urgent needs. This gap risks alienating voters who are struggling to survive daily economic hardships.
