Chernor Bah, Minister of Information and Civic Education, met with the leadership of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, to improve inclusion and collaboration between the two institutions.
Minister Bah, who has championed social care advocacy for war-wounded and amputees, praised the Commission for its efforts to advance the rights and welfare of people with disabilities throughout the country.
He said the ministry was especially proud of its decision to include sign language interpretation in all major public engagement programs.
“Sign language interpreters now attend 100% of our public engagements. “We are proud of that accomplishment and will continue to maintain it,” Minister Bah stated, encouraging other ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to follow suit.
The minister stated that the ministry is eager to strengthen its partnership with the Commission to ensure that more people with disabilities have access to and benefit from public information.
Speaking at the meeting, Brima Abdulai Sheriff, Chairman of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, urged the ministry to work with the Commission to organise a national education conference.
“Our primary mandate is to promote and advocate for issues affecting people with disabilities,” Sheriff stated. “Through this conference, we hope to bring together stakeholders in the education sector to better understand and uphold the rights of people with disabilities, particularly access to tertiary education.”
The sheriff also expressed concern about television stations’ limited use of sign language interpreters, calling it a major barrier to information access.
“Television stations are marginalising a significant portion of our community,” he explained. “We want them to start, at the very least, with sign language interpretation during their main news broadcasts.”
In his response, Minister Bah promised to work with the Independent Media Commission to ensure that television stations take concrete steps to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.
