On January 16, 2026, President Dr Julius Maada Bio formally opened the new National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) District Office in Moyamba. He described the establishment as a significant step toward increasing social protection, decentralising public services, and encouraging inclusive development outside of Freetown.

The President told attendees at the commissioning ceremony that the Moyamba office embodies his administration’s commitment to bringing essential services closer to the people, particularly workers in rural and provincial communities who are critical to Sierra Leone’s economy. “This structure is more than just bricks and mortar,” President Bio declared. “It is about dignity, security, and the assurance that hardworking people in this district and surrounding areas can easily and confidently access their social security benefits.”

President Bio emphasised the importance of a strong, accessible pension system for human capital development and the broader social safety net. He contended that ensuring workers’ access to benefits during their productive lives and in retirement strengthens families and communities while also supporting long-term economic growth.

The President praised NASSIT’s recent reforms and governance improvements, as well as the institution’s expanding national footprint. He recognised the trust’s role in promoting national development through prudent investment strategies, job creation initiatives, and strict safeguards of contributor funds. According to the President, these characteristics increase public trust and ensure that social security services are delivered effectively.

Decentralisation, according to the President, remains a top policy priority for his government. The state hopes that by establishing service points like the Moyamba office, it will reduce pressure on central institutions in Freetown, increase operational efficiency, and improve citizens’ access to public services. He urged NASSIT employees to uphold professionalism, transparency, and integrity in their daily duties, emphasising that public trust is earned through accountability and high-quality service to contributors and beneficiaries.

The commissioning ceremony brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government officials, traditional leaders, NASSIT board and management members, staff, and community members who welcomed the new facility as a timely intervention. The Moyamba office is expected to serve contributors and beneficiaries from the district and surrounding areas, supporting the government’s broader agenda of people-centred governance, social protection, and inclusive economic growth.
