Rt. Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, former ECOWAS Parliament Speaker and Member of Parliament for Pujehun District, has made a significant financial and material donation to the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) in Tonkolili District, to strengthen the party’s grassroots capacity.
In response to an invitation from the SLPP Tonkolili District Executive, Hon. Tunis presented a cash grant of NLe 400,000 to district leadership. In addition to the monetary contribution, he provided 1,000 bags of cement and five tons of iron rods to help build the district’s SLPP Party Office. The building materials are valued at around USD 20,000. Aside from the immediate injection of funds and construction supplies, Hon. Tunis promised to recruit all Constituency Young Generation (YG) leaders in Tonkolili as part of a larger youth empowerment campaign.
Hon. Tunis described the intervention as part of his national efforts to strengthen the SLPP at the local level, aligning it with President Julius Maada Bio’s Big Five Agenda. He stated that his actions were intended to strengthen the party’s financial resources, operational capacity, and organisational structure in communities across the country.
In remarks at the event, Reverend Ahmed Saybon Kanu, SLPP District Secretary and Tonkolili District Chairman, praised Hon. Tunis as a long-serving and loyal member of the party whose contributions have aided the SLPP’s growth for decades. Kanu and other district leaders publicly expressed their unwavering support for Tunis, describing him as a leader who embodies the qualities the party requires going forward.
Addressing an enthusiastic crowd of supporters, Hon. Tunis made it clear that his visit was unrelated to any flag-bearer campaign. He stated that his primary goal was to engage directly with young people in the district and encourage them to avoid drug abuse, particularly the increasing use of Kush, which he claims has harmed many youths. He urged party supporters to discipline themselves and take collective responsibility, emphasising the importance of internal unity ahead of upcoming political contests.
“The only might we have to retain power is unity,” Hon. Tunis declared emphatically, urging members to be brave, collaborate, and prioritise the party’s collective progress.
He also used the occasion to highlight national accomplishments under President Bio’s leadership, lauding progress in education, health, the rule of law, women’s empowerment, tourism, and agriculture. According to Hon. Tunis, these sectors are the foundational pillars of Sierra Leone’s economic advancement and human capital development, and he claims that President Bio has “set the pace for Sierra Leone to achieve its goals both locally and internationally,” restoring trust among international partners and positioning the country for greater prosperity.
The event concluded with jubilant celebrations as party supporters expressed gratitude for the assistance and pledged to strengthen the SLPP’s presence and operations throughout Tonkolili District.
