Chief Justice Komba Kamanda and His Excellency Wang Qing

The Honourable Chief Justice Komba Kamanda has successfully procured six motorcycles from His Excellency Wang Qing, the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, as part of a significant initiative to improve access to justice in Sierra Leone’s remote regions. This donation demonstrates the Chief Justice’s unwavering commitment to improving the efficiency of judicial services across the nation.

During the official ceremony presenting the motorcycles, Ambassador Wang congratulated Chief Justice Kamanda on his recent appointment as Chairman of the Judicial Council of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He expressed confidence that this contribution would increase the Judiciary’s capacity, allowing it to reach underserved areas in Sierra Leone. The Ambassador emphasised that this donation was the result of several productive capacity-building meetings, as well as the Chief Justice’s determination to improve access to justice for all citizens.

Ambassador Wang reaffirmed his commitment to working with the judiciary on various development initiatives, emphasising the importance of improving judicial services in Sierra Leone. In turn, Chief Justice Kamanda expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Ambassador Wang and the People’s Republic of China for their ongoing support of Sierra Leone’s judiciary. He stated that the motorcycles would be used by bailiffs to facilitate the timely service of legal documents in difficult-to-reach areas, thereby speeding up the overall delivery of justice.

“Under my leadership, the Judiciary has grown significantly, with our presence now established in areas where there were previously no Magistrates,” Chief Justice Kamanda stated. He emphasized that the motorcycles are intended for the Bailiffs department, which plays a crucial role in process serving and other essential judicial activities in challenging terrains across the nation.

“Access to Justice is one of my primary reform priorities within the Judiciary. The introduction of these motorcycles will ensure that justice is delivered more quickly in the communities they will serve,” he said. The Chief Justice also described his collaborative discussions with the Chinese Ambassador, during which various developmental needs were addressed, including a request for motorcycles and buses for judicial staff.

As he received the documents and keys for the six motorcycles, Chief Justice Kamanda expressed confidence in Sierra Leone’s long-standing bilateral relationship with China. He hopes that this collaboration will continue to benefit both parties, improving judicial services and ensuring that justice is available to all citizens, regardless of their geographical location. This initiative not only improves judicial efficiency, but it also emphasises the value of international cooperation in strengthening local governance and access to justice.
